Blueberries Sending the Right Signals
Recently the Australian Blueberry Growers Association was visited by world leading scientist Dr James Joseph from Tufts University in Boston, whose research has led to blueberries being hailed as one of the world's super foods, helping to slow the ageing process of the brain and even stalling the onset of Alzheimer's disease.Dr Joseph believes that blueberries could be the key to keeping the mind young. It is his opinion that "we don't as yet fully understand the mechanisms involved in these behavioural/neuronal communication benefits of berries". "But," he continued, "recent studies suggest that berries may reduce the signals created by inflammatory and oxidative stressors and increase signals that are important in facilitating information concerned with learning and memory."
Dr Joseph's research suggests that eating a cup of blueberries a day will help keep the mind youthful. Other foods which may help include spinach, walnuts and grapefruit juice. Conclusive studies so far have involved only old rodents, but early trials on human brains are showing a positive increase in human reaction times.
